‘Never Waste a Good Crisis’ Report published
The Construction interest group Constructing Excellence recently published a report setting out the current state of the construction industry. The report authored by Andrew Wolstenholme of Balfour Beatty aims to review the progress made by the industry since the Sir John Egan published Rethinking Construction in 1998 and set out the challenges for the next 10 years.
In summary, the report has highlighted several issues that are blocking progress, namely:
- Business models based on short term cycles;
- A lack of strategic commitment at senior management and Government levels; and
- A poorly integrated supply chain.
The report also underlines the changes that are necessary to make the UK Construction Industry competitive and successful moving forward. It recognises that the Government are unlikely to bear the cost of improving the industry and calls on the industry itself, including contractors, sub-contractors and professional consultants to lead the way over the next few years and not to waste the opportunities provided by innovation, collaboration and integrated working within the current market. However the author remains unsure over whether such change can be implemented, especially when considering how disparate certain areas of the industry are.
