April 2010
Additional paternity leave
Government plans to introduce additional paternity leave (“APL”) in April 2010 have been delayed. Subject to consultation and parliamentary procedure, the Department for Business Innovation & Skills now intends the new scheme to come into force on 6 April 2010 and to apply to parents of children born on or after 3 April 2011 or to adoptive parents who are notified of having been matched with a child on or after that date. APL will allow fathers and partners of those giving birth or adopting a child to share up to 6 months of their maternity or adoption leave and some of their pay if the mother or adopter returns to work early.
